Thank you for the reply Claire, and you are correct. It is a crazy year.
For me it comes down to if they are robust or not. Lots of bees, lots of brood, I don't feed. But for those that are barely medium size, I am still feeding especially polllen patties. It seems to me there's a great difference in the quality of queens.
What's completely surprised me is the small to medium size colonies (five to seven frames of bees) with lots of space that are making swarm cells. There's no way that either the swarm or the remaining colony will have enough bees to survive. It's a crazy year.
So glad you are back into beekeeping!
I am still feeding this years Nucs (about 2-3 gallons/week). Added second deep about 3 weeks ago. Thought that by now they would be able to find other sources for nectar.
