Thanks Nonda. We are just past MP 11 on Trask River Rd so figuring there are some bears nearby. Hopefully our electric fence deters them!

Without getting too specific can you tell us the region where this beekeeper is located? We recently put in a bear fence but I'm still concerned about bear activity. Thanks

We had a bear attack overnight with one of our members and one of her hives was destroyed.  Text messages began flying back and forth about what to do.  The best answer is that she should have had an electric fence up NLT yesterday.

Nonetheless, she still needs to put up an electric fence to prevent further incident.  The bear will highly likely return for the other hive after having had such a tasting treat last night.

I went to the ODFW office up the street from me to get the facts.  No need to work on rumor.  They provided me with a few docs and very good info.

I am attaching three documents here on the best specs for electric fencing.  I will also place them permanently on this website under forms and docs which is under About Bees on the main menu.

As for shooting a bear.  Per ODFW, if you are outside of the city limits, you are perfectly legal in shooting a bear that is destroying property.  No tag or license required.  You need to call ODFW and let them know within 24 hours of the shooting and they will help manage the matter.  IF, bears are a continued issue, they will come out to your property and "manage the issue" for you.  Their management methods are always lethal.  They don't relocate the animal(s).
